Otakar Ševčík

Otakar Ševčík ( born March 22, 1852 in Horažďovice; † January 18, 1934 in Pisek ) was a Czech violinist.

Biography

The son of a teacher and director of the church choir studied at Prague's Academic Grammar School and from 1866 to 1870 at the conservatory to play the violin. After graduation, he was from 1870 to 1873 worked as concertmaster at the Salzburg Mozarteum and later in Vienna, Poland and the Russian Kiev. Ševčík became known as violin soloist and as a chamber musician and played with Eugène Ysaÿe. Current and future stays abroad contributed to its popularity among his particularly extensive teaching.

According to an eye disease, he ended his concert career and taught from 1875 to 1892 at the Tsarist music school in Kharkiv, after 14 years at the Prague Conservatory. In 1909 he was returning to Vienna where he taught for nine years at the Vienna Music Academy. After the founding of Czechoslovakia, he returned to his home and was appointed professor of the Conservatory. Three times he was invited to longer educational visits to the United States, including Boston, Chicago and New York, conducted master classes in Mondsee and still led with 81 years of master classes by in England.

In 1957 in Vienna Liesing ( 23rd district ) was named the Sevcikgasse after him.
