Othmar Zeidler

Othmar Zeidler ( born August 29, 1850 in Vienna, † June 17, 1911 in Wall at Vienna) was an Austrian chemist. Zeidler synthesized as part of his inaugural dissertation ( thesis ) for the first time the connection dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane that was to become later as an insecticide DDT great importance.

Zeidlers doctoral thesis at the University of Strasbourg under the leadership of Adolf von Baeyer had a purely chemical- scientific background. Zeidler has the meaning of the synthesized substance of it not recognized and not seen their application. The insecticidal properties of DDT were not detected until more than 60 years later by Paul Hermann Müller.

Zeidler returned after finishing his studies, returned to Vienna where he later the pharmacy to Archangel Michael in Vienna XV took over.
