Oton Župančič

Oton Župančič ( born January 23, 1878 in Vinica, Bela Krajina, † June 11 1949 in Ljubljana ) was a Slovene writer and translator.

Life

Župančič attended high school in Ljubljana and Novo mesto and studied from 1896 in Vienna, history and geography. He worked as an archivist and director of the National Theatre in Ljubljana. In addition to Ivan Cankar, Dragotin chain and Josip Murn he is considered the founder of modernism in Slovene literature. He married 1913 Ana Kessler ( Ana Župančič ), daughter of Maria Kessler and sister of Vera Albreht. During the Italian and German occupation of Slovenia during the Second World War, he sympathized with the Slovenian Liberation Front and wrote poems under various pseudonyms for anti-fascist underground magazines. After the war ended in 1945, he received several honorary appointments and awards by the communist regime of Yugoslavia. He died in 1949 and was buried in the cemetery in Ljubljana Žale how his childhood friends Ivan Cankar, Dragotin chain and Josip Murn.
