Ottavio Rinuccini

Ottavio Rinuccini (* January 20, 1562, † March 28, 1621 in Florence ) was an Italian poet and librettist. Together with the composer Jacopo Peri in 1598 he created the first opera.

Life

Rinuccini was a nobleman and courtier at the court of the Medici in Florence. As a poet, he was a member of the Accademia Fiorentina and the Accademia degli elevati and belonged to the Florentine Camerata. Together with the members of the Camerata Rinuccini was involved in the emergence of several Florentine intermedia. On the occasion of the magnificent wedding Ferdinando de 'Medici with Christine of Lorraine in 1589 created six of these interludes to the drama La Pellegrina by Girolamo Bargagli where Rinuccini participated as lyricists and where the poet Giovanni de' Bardi and next Peri composers Emilio de ' Cavalieri, Luca Marenzio and Cristofano Malvezzi were involved. In the following years Rinuccini supplied the composer of antique texts pastorals in the tradition of Tasso to subjects such as the Daphne and the Orpheus myth, with which he was style icon for the entire 17th and 18th centuries.

For Jacopo Peri and other members of the Camerata he wrote the text of the first real opera, La Dafne ( 1598 ), favola drammatica in a prologue and six scenes. The music of this opera has been lost except for a few fragments, their effect on the history of music, however, is of far-reaching significance. Thus the text of the first German opera, Dafne Tragicomoedia is from the ( 1627 ) by Martin Opitz (music by Heinrich Schütz ) a free transfer from Rinuccini's work. 1601-03 remained Rinuccini, at the invitation of Mary of Medici in Paris, where she learned to know the courtly literature opera, Il Ballo delle Ingrate from Monteverdi follows in the form of the French model of a court or dance opera.
