Investigation for Hitler garden gnomes

In July 2009 the prosecutor's office in Nuremberg initiated against a Hoerl investigation for use of symbols of unconstitutional organizations. The occasion was an anonymous complaint against Hoerl and operators of Nuremberg gallery in which a golden garden gnome Hörl was issued, who has his right hand raised in the Hitler salute. Hoerl even understands the dwarf, exist of which about 700 copies, as a " parody of the master race of the Nazis." In all previous exhibitions, the dwarves had indeed been the occasion for discussion, but he himself was doing never moved into the vicinity of the Nazi ideology. Even the Jewish community in Ghent, where the dwarves were first issued, had shown impressed by the work. The investigation was set a few days after the announcement.

In October 2009, he showed an installation of 1,200 garden gnomes with Hitler salute in Straubing - invited and supported by the SPD local chapter. The Vice President of the International Dachau Committee Max Mannheimer commented, this form of dealing with the past in a public place is completely out of place. Any attempt to trivialize the Nazis, even under the guise of artistic freedom, is thoughtless and irresponsible.
