Otto Harrassowitz

Otto Wilhelm Harrassowitz ( born December 18, 1845 in La Guayará, Venezuela, † June 24, 1920 in Gaschwitz, Saxony ) was a German bookseller, publisher and author.

The later Royal Saxon Court Councillor Harrassowitz came with ten years of Germany. In 1864 he began an apprenticeship as a bookseller at Leipzig Antiquarian KF Koehler in Leipzig, after the end of his four -year apprenticeship he remained for three years as an assistant in the company. It was followed by a stay abroad at the company Frederic Muller in Amsterdam. In 1872 he founded with Oscar judges the bookstore Richter & Harrassowitz. After the departure of judges in 1875 he was the sole owner. From 1882 Harrassowitz concentrated in his company on the humanities. In 1894 he bought the company K. F. Koehler. In addition to the Antiquarian Harrassowitz took over as publisher and the Zentralblatt founded in 1884 for librarianship. The publisher has developed into a specialized bookseller that developed a worldwide reputation for its approximately 500 Antiquarian catalogs. Otto Harrassowitz 1920 was buried in the South Cemetery Leipzig.
