Otto Malling

Otto Valdemar Malling ( born June 1, 1848 in Copenhagen, † October 5, 1915 ) was a Danish organist and composer.

Biography

Malling was a student of Niels Wilhelm Gade and Johann Peter Emilius Hartmann and studied organ with Gottfred Matthison -Hansen. In 1874 he founded with Christian Horneman the Koncertforeningen that brought works by contemporary Danish and foreign composers for performance. Until its dissolution in 1893, he worked here alternately with Hartmann as a conductor.

From 1878, worked as an organist Malling first at the Sankt Petri Kirke, from 1891 to the Helligåndskirken and 1900 on the front Frue Kirke. From 1885 he taught at the conservatory in Copenhagen. In recognition of his contributions to the implementation of the Nordic Music Festival in 1888 he was appointed professor in 1889. In 1899 he became director of the Conservatory.

In addition to organ music composed Malling orchestral and chamber music, piano pieces, choral works and songs. Among his compositions there is a piano trio, a string octet, and one of the few romantic Danish piano concertos. He has also written the first Danish textbook on orchestration.

Also Mallings brother Jørgen Malling became known as a composer.
