Otto Scholderer

Franz Otto Scholderer ( born January 25, 1834 in Frankfurt am Main, † January 22, 1902 ) was a German painter.

Life

Scholderer came immediately after finishing his schooling in 1849 at the Städel Art Academy and was there until 1851, inter alia, student of the art historian Johann David Passavant and the painter Jacob Becker. Subsequently, Scholderer was down there as a freelance painter. From this period resulted Scholderers friendship with Victor Muller, whose brother he was 1868.

By Müller Scholderer learned the works of Gustave Courbet know and appreciate and Müller it was who persuaded him to write several short study trips to Paris 1857-1858. In Paris Scholderer also included friendship with Henri Fantin -Latour and Édouard Manet and was influenced by them. Fantin- Latour immortalized Scholderer on his atelier aux Batignolles Picture Un (1870 ).

From 1858 lived and worked Scholderer predominantly in Kronberg im Taunus. There he is, inter alia, Anton Burger, Peter Burnitz and Louis Eysen and was also close to the Kronberger painter colony. 1866 settled in Dusseldorf Scholderer down and then became friends with Hans Thoma. With Thoma Scholderer went to Paris in 1868 and did not return until shortly before the outbreak of the Franco-German war back to Germany.

First, Scholderer settled in Munich, where he Wilhelm Leibl and his circle joined. Leibl he also knew even from his time in Paris. Beginning in 1871 Scholderer went to London and worked there until the autumn of 1899. Scholderer the end of 1899 came to his hometown of Frankfurt am Main back.

There he died at the age of almost 68 years on 22 January 1902. Otto Scholderers principal artistic work consists of portraits and still life, with his early work is still dominated by scenic impressions. Just today we see Scholderer an important link between the Romantic and the Impressionist movement.
