Otto the Mild, Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg

Otto of Brunswick- Göttingen (* June 24, 1292; † August 30, 1344 in Göttingen) called the mildness, was Duke of Brunswick -Lüneburg and Göttingen. He was the son of Albert II, of the 1318 he inherited the title.

Life

Otto was married twice. The first time from 1311 with Jutta von Hesse ( 1289-1317 ), daughter of Henry I of Hesse and Mechtild of Cleves. After her death he married in 1319 Agnes of Brandenburg, daughter of Hermann III. of Brandenburg and widow of Waldemar of Brandenburg. From his first marriage he had a daughter Agnes ( 1317 to June 2, 1371 ).

1318-1344 Otto was the mildness and from 1323 to 1334 his wife Agnes in possession of the castle Calvörde and the market town Calvörde.

With the death of the last askanischen Margrave of Brandenburg Ludwig joined the Bayer 's heritage. Otto the Mild of Brunswick had received the Bavaria pledged a number altmärkischer cities for a hereditary settlement with Ludwig. After his death, his brothers Ernst and Magnus split the inheritance. Ernst received the Principality of Göttingen and Magnus the Principality of Brunswick- Wolfenbüttel, which he ruled until his death in 1369. This division is for the country Braunschweig therefore important because it was held for the first time in the history of the country by its own duke.
