Ouémé Department

Ouémé is a department of Benin with the capital Porto Novo.

Geography

The Department is located in the southeast of the country, bordered to the north by the department of Zou, on the south by the Atlantic Ocean, on the west by the departments of Atlantique and Littoral, on the northeast by the Department plateau and in the southeast Nigeria.

Population

At the last census in 2002 counted 730 772 inhabitants the department.

Ethnic groups

The largest peoples are the Gun with 32.9 %, the Oueme with 22.0% and 15.4% with Fon. There are also numerous Joruba and Adja.

Religions

Today Christianity is 67.0 %, the majority of the population ( including 55 % Catholic, 18% of the Eglise de Céleste and 12 % of other members of African Independent Churches ). Larger minorities are the followers of Islam with 12.1% of the voodoo cult with 11.0% share of the population.

History

1999, the northern and central part was separated as Department plateau.
