Our Lady of the Rosary

The Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Rosary ( Mariae Virginis Beatae a Rosario ), briefly called Feast of the Rosary, in the liturgy of the Catholic Church, a festival which is celebrated on October 7.

History

The Feast of the Rosary was instituted by Pope Pius V. ( pope 1566-1572 ) Our Lady donated as a memorial of the victory, the so wanted to express his gratitude for the victory of the Christian fleet in the Battle of Lepanto in 1571. It was celebrated on the first Sunday in October. Already in 1573 it was instituted by Pope Gregory XIII. renamed Our Lady of the Rosary. In 1716, after the victory of the imperial troops under the command of Prince Eugene of Savoy over the Ottoman Empire at the Battle of Petrovaradin in Hungary, they took on the festival in the Roman calendar. In 1913, they put it firmly on the 7th of October.

Representation in the visual arts

Albrecht Dürer painted in 1506 in Venice, a large painting entitled The Feast of the Rosary, which is now located in the National Gallery in Prague.

The Feast of the Rosary is the first Eintafelaltar factory Dürer. Shown is the Mother of God on a throne canopy held by putti. Two other Putten let a crown floating above her head, an angel playing lute at her feet.

Mary, the Christ Child, St. Dominic, the origin of the rosary devotion is attributed, and more Putten distribute rosaries in a crowd, led by the Emperor and the Pope.
