Oxymonacanthus

Palettenstachler ( Oxymonacanthus longirostris )

The Palettenstachler ( Oxymonacanthus ) also pallet Einstachler or Harlequin Filefish called, are a very colorful type of file fish. They are extreme dietary specialists and feed exclusively on the polyp stony corals, genus Acropora.

There are two types:

  • Oxymonacanthus halli, which lives exclusively in the Red Sea and is 7 inches long.
  • Oxymonacanthus longirostris, who lives in the Indo-Pacific from East Africa to Japan and Tonga and is 12 inches long.

Young animals live in small groups, adult animals in pairs.

Aquarium maintenance

Palettenstachler are sometimes offered in stores for the attitude in saltwater aquariums. However, since their nutritional requirements can not be met, they starve after a short time.
