P. Henry Dugro

Philip Henry Dugro ( born October 3, 1855 in New York City; † March 1, 1920 ) was an American lawyer, politician and hotelier. Between 1881 and 1883 he represented the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Philip Henry Dugro was born about six years before the outbreak of the Civil War in New York City and grew up there. During this time he attended public schools, graduated in 1876 at the Art School of Columbia College (now Columbia University) in New York City and in 1878 at the Faculty of Law. His admission to the bar he received in 1878 and then began to practice in New York City. The following year, he was sitting in the New York State Assembly. Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party.

In the congressional elections of 1880 for the 47th Congress, he was in the seventh election district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Edwin Einstein on 4 March 1881. Since he gave up for reelection in 1882, he retired after March 3, 1883 from the Congress.

After his time he took Congress in New York City his work as a lawyer, and went also after real estate transactions. In 1885 he refused the position of State Commissioner of Immigration. He was from 1887 to 1896 Judge of the Superior Court of New York County. At that time, the court was merged with the New York Supreme Court. He then worked from 1896 until his death on March 1, 1920 as an Associate Justice (associate justice) of the Supreme Court.

Dugro was long-time supporters of the Democratic Tammany Hall, and became wealthy through real estate investments.

On 1 October 1907 he opened the luxurious " Hotel Savoy " on Fifth Avenue in New York City, which he owned and where he lived for the rest of his life. It was renamed in 1920 to the Plaza and in the novels " The Great Gatsby " and " Eloise " and in the films " North by Northwest " and " Kevin - in New York alone, " shown. The Plaza has been declared a National Historic Landmark in Manhattan in 1986.
