Paamiut / Kitaa

Paamiut (Danish: Frederikshåb, before 1973: Pâmiut to about German population at the mouth ) is a settlement in southern Greenland on Kuannersooq Fjord (Danish Kvane Fjord ) and has 1568 inhabitants ( 2012).

Was founded the settlement in 1742 by merchants and missionaries. 1772 the place for trading station of the Royal Greenland Company ( bacon, skins ) has been extended. Today is Paamiut home of the largest cod filleting factory Greenland and the fishing and maritime school in the country. The coast of Paamiut area shall be considered one of the largest populations of humpback and fin whales.

At the port, the old colonial buildings are preserved as well as the established Church of Peace in 1909, while elsewhere, modern, multi-storey buildings of the 1960s form the picture. The area is popular with hikers.

Paamiut has been the home of the Greenland missionary and later Bishop Otto Fabricius, who published scientific papers on Greenland in the 18th century.

Until January 1, 2009 Paamiut was an independent municipality to the next Paamiut itself nor the settlement belonged Arsuk. In the course of administrative reform it was incorporated into the newly formed municipality Sermersooq.
