Pachelbel's Canon

Canon and Gigue in D major is the most famous piece of Nuremberg Baroque composer Johann Pachelbel ( 1653-1706 ). In many cases, Pachelbel is identified by this work. The original name of the original editions is Canon per 3 Violini e Basso.

It is the only composed by him canon. From the canon of today, there are numerous recordings, versions and edits. The harmony - sequence is used across all genres of music over and over again.

The occupation of the three-part canon is given in the original editions with 3 Violins and Basso Continuo. The piece is based on a permanently repeated bass figure ( ostinato ). The as Pachelbel scheme called two-bar chord progression D - A - h - F # / G - D - G - A canon used a sequence, namely the parallelism, and is a total of 28 times repeated - thus result together with the final stroke total of 57 measures through which this chord progression is strictly adhered to.

The catchy chord progression of the piece appeared so frequently in contemporary music pieces that were written about it already comedic numbers.

The canon is followed by a Gigue. This is in 12/8-Takt and is 40 bars long.
