Pachypodium ambongense

Ambongense Pachypodium is a plant of the genus Pachypodium in the family of the dogbane family ( Apocynaceae ).

Description

Pachypodium ambongense is a perennial plant whose stem is 1 to 1.5 m high, is thickened and smooth bottle-shaped and branched only sparsely. The plant is covered with 5 to 10 cm long spines that are in pairs. The leaves are elliptic obovate, rounded and 3 to 8 cm long and 1.5 to 3 cm wide. The underside is pubescent tomentose. The petioles are 2-7 mm long.

The flowers appear singly or in groups of up to five. They are white in color, measuring about 5.5 cm in diameter and are 3 to 3.5 cm long. The fruits reach a size of 10 cm.

Occurrence

The species is widespread in Madagascar.
