Paco Peña

Paco Peña ( born June 1, 1942 in Córdoba, Andalusia, full name Francisco Peña Pérez ) is a Spanish flamenco guitarist, composer and lecturer.

Life

He learned to play the guitar at age six by his brother, played with nine already in an ensemble and had his first public appearances at age 12. He made ​​his way to Madrid and the Costa Brava to earn money as a flamenco guitarist. When he left his home in 1964, he found in London ( solo ) flamenco guitarist great recognition. His performances have taken him to Ronnie Scott 's Jazz Club and Royal Albert Hall in London, New York's Carnegie Hall, the Sydney Opera House and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam.

In 1981 he founded the Centro Flamenco Paco Peña in Córdoba, his hometown. Later he was appointed Artistic Director of the Córdoba International Guitar Festival. In 1985 he took up his professorship of flamenco guitar at the Rotterdam Conservatory, where he teaches today. Paco Peña was the first flamenco guitarist who was offered a chair in a conservatory. Since its foundation in 2006, he teaches flamenco at the World Music and Dance Centre (WMDC ) in Rotterdam.

Repertoire

He stands in the tradition of flamenco by Ramón Montoya (whom he lived to live in his lifetime ), Niño Ricardo and Sabicas.

Ensemble

He often shares the stage with other guitarists, dancers and singers and music groups. Peña worked with Eduardo Falú, John Williams, Inti Illimani - under Horacio Salinas and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields.

Awards

He received in 1997 from the hands of King Juan Carlos I in recognition of his services the Order del Mérito Civil.
