Pádraig Ó Riain

Pádraig Ó Riain [ pɑ ː ʲ o ː Drig riən ʲ ] (* 1939) is an Irish Keltologe and Hagiologe. He is considered the leading expert on the Irish saints.

Ó Riain spent his academic life largely at University College Cork. From 1964 he was professor there from 1973 to his retirement Professor of Old and Middle Irish. He is a member of the Royal Irish Academy, since 1992 President of the Irish Texts Society, since 2002 Parnell Fellow at Magdalene College, Cambridge University and recently became a member of the Place Names Commission of Ireland since 1989. In 1995 he was awarded the Humboldt Prize of the Federal Republic of Germany and 2003 for " distinction in the field of Celtic Studies" Derek Allen Prize of the British Academy.

His research focuses on the Irish hagiography, mythology, onomastics, the manuscript studies and the Irish martyrs.
