Paguridae

Pagurus bernhardus

The right-handed hermit crabs ( Paguridae ) resemble the Diogenidae just is with them the right claw is larger. They live in all oceans, from the coasts to the deep sea. Most of the over 550 species remain smaller than their left-handed relatives.

They include the Common Hermit Crab ( Pagurus bernhardus ) from the North Atlantic, the North Sea and the Baltic and Pagurus prideaux who lives in symbiosis with the sea anemone Adamsia palliata from Norway to the Mediterranean.

Pylopagurus discoid lives on the Atlantic coast of North America in the empty casings of Kahnfüßern.

A special way of life have the tiny hermit crabs of the genus Paguritta. They live sessile in the empty tubes of serpulidae between stony corals. They begin with their feathery antennae past driving plankton.
