Origin of the name

The name " Pain of Salvation", which means " pain of salvation " in German, comes from Daniel Gildenlöw, who thus wanted to represent a kind of balance of opposites in life: good and evil, light and darkness, pain, and redemption:

" I wanted a name did Meant something, a name which did more than a cool expression. For me, Pain of Salvation Has the meaning of balance. Taking the good with the bad. It is therefore a good expression in everyday use, When something does not go the way you Planned; "well, that's just the pain of salvation, " to indicate indicating thatthis is just a slight setback on to otherwise painless journey towards your goal. "

It is also a good everyday expression, for example, if something does not go as planned, "Oh, that's just the pain of salvation," to indicate that it is only a minor setback on an otherwise unproblematic journey towards the own goal. "

The band was called until 1991, but still reality. The name change due Gildenlöw a personal character change:

" I Formed my first band- at eleven, I called it Reality. When I turned 15, I Decided to change, because i did not the same as in the age of 11, I tried to come up with a new band name. It was falling on a math lesson, I was writing band- names. I wrote Pain of Salvation and it stuck. I Showed it to my classmate, who later Became a member of the band, He Said too long, nobody would remember that! "

While I was writing band names in a mathematics lesson, I wrote " Pain of Salvation " and it stuck. Band History

The early days (1984-1986)

The band was founded in 1984 by the then eleven year old Daniel Gildenlöw under the name Reality. One of the first members was Daniel Magdic, who remained in the band until after the recording of their first album in 1997. In 1987, Reality qualified to participate at the annual Swedish band competition Rock SM, including Europe were known by the years before. They were the youngest participants in the competition's history, Daniel Gildenlöw won it the award for the best singer.

The year 1990 was marked by several line-up changes, as Gildenlöw and Magdic had difficulties to implement their musical ideas with the current cast. In particular, the then 14 -year-old drummer Johan Langell and bassist Gustaf Hielm pushed to do so. A year later, the renaming took place in " Pain of Salvation " instead. The next three years was able to record several successes at competitions in Sweden the band; some of the songs from this period are on the early albums.

Gustaf Hielm was replaced in 1994 by Daniel Gildenlöw younger brother Kristoffer Gildenlöw; this new line-up remained stable over the years and soon led to the recording of the first serious demo "Hereafter", which contained both old and new material and was intended as applying to a record label. Since the recordings but still lacked the keyboard, the band went on a search for a suitable keyboard player. Fredrik Hermansson, who heard the Hereafter recording with a fellow student who was invited to an audition and in 1996 was then the fifth member of the band.

The first album (1996-1997)

Two of the first addressees of the demo was sent to were Marquee / Belle Antique ( a Japanese label) and Roasting House ( a recording studio in Malmö). 1997 found the recordings for the first album " Entropia " held at Roasting House Studio. In Asia album of Marquees Avalon label was sold in August and earned positive media coverage. With the emerging proliferation of online music stores to Entropia spread internationally, what Pain of Salvation made known and further earned another contract with the Romanian label SC Rocris discs.

The album was released in Europe in 1999 through InsideOut Music, after the second album " One Hour by the Concrete Lake " is successfully sold. In South America, it only came in that year for publication, there through Hellion Records.

The follow-up album and record deal

Even during the preparations for the second album Daniel Magdic left the band, reason was the constant disagreements with the other members with respect to the performance- related increase in time required. After a short selection he was replaced by Johan Hallgren, who has already played previously with Magdic in the band Crypt of Kerberos. Hallgren was immediately involved in the recording of their second album, even though it meant an enormous steep learning curve in a short time for him. Then Daniel Gildenlöw was aware of the complexity of the guitar parts, he prepared are already preparing to merge the parts themselves, but Hallgren surprised the band with the fact that he got all the pieces in just three weeks and thus could act as a full band member. Result, he was in April 1998, officially Magdics successor.

The resulting album, " One Hour by the Concrete Lake " was distributed in Asia from July 1998 and again from Avalon was there even more successful than its predecessor. It was quickly dubbed as a masterpiece and received much attention from fans and magazines worldwide. It was described as heavier, darker and more mature than " Entropia " and reached such a great response that the enthusiasm spilled over to Europe. This ultimately led to a record deal with the progressive -rock- oriented label InsideOut Music and later to the U.S. offshoot InsideOut Music America. In South America, led as before Hellion the album, it came out in May 1999.

Also in 1999, the band played a European tour, where they at other progressive metal bands like Threshold ( in the UK) or Eldritch ( Italy ) played as the opening act. Also, the first performance at the ProgPower Festival in the Netherlands came to be.

Findings of critic (2000-2003)

After a short pause, Pain of Salvation took the recording of their third album The Perfect Element, Part I in July 2000 attack. After it was published in October of the same year, it reaped enormous international acclaim. The band toured again in Europe and then was also in the U.S. during the ProgPower USA to hear.

Just one year later the recordings for their fourth album, Remedy Lane took place, which sprang in just two months hand Daniel Gildenlöw. When it came on the market in January 2002, it was overwhelmed by the progressive metal community with praise and referred to as the best work to date. During the subsequent follow those touring Pain of Salvation has been posted as special guest opening act for Dream Theater.

Both albums was said to refresh the genre with originality and diversity after it has been perceived by many as stagnant:

"One of the impression of stagnation, can not resist. How about the Proglegenden the Blessed 70s, so today hangs the pall of the lack of imagination on the prog metal genre. Where are the ideas, where the originality, where the fresh blood? Quo vadis? One could almost despair, not rail in Sweden düster'n a little light in the gray night. Probably no Progmetalband was so hotly debated in recent years, condemned and idolized like Pain of Salvation, which you far resounding "!" Translated 2000 The Perfect Element pt.I behind the " We're still alive ," the prog metal. "

They are often praised for the successful connection of the concept. The Perfect Element, Part I looks at the events that shape a man in his journey from youth to adulthood. The 2007 released album " Scarsick ", despite the different name than The Perfect Element, Part II to be understood. Remedy Lane describes a partly autobiographical, partly fictional story of Daniel Gildenlöw life, in which he deals with the themes of love, lust and the miracle of birth. Both albums were recorded again in the Roasting House Studio.

On 12 May 2003 Pain of Salvation was an acoustic concert in their hometown of Eskilstuna before around 80 visitors, which was recorded and released in 2004 under the name " 12:5 ", an allusion to the concert date. The case played songs, including works of albums Remedy Lane and The Perfect Element, Part I, thereby partially deviate strongly from the album versions, because Daniel Gildenlöw did not want to import an unplugged album, but create something special. Therefore, consider both the band and fans alike, " 12:5 " as an independent work. While it was well received by many for its bold interpretations of the pieces felt the other acoustic versions able than less.

"BE" (2004-2005)

As of 2003, Pain of Salvation spent the most time with the development of its hitherto most ambitious album BE, a concept album about the nature of the existence of God and man. Daniel Gildenlöw has worked since 1996 at the concept in which not only the actual band and a small symphony orchestra should participate. Before the material, however, was recorded for a CD, the band played the entire program at concerts in Eskilstuna. The concerts were designed as a full doing shows with costumes, stage props and projections. Along with the band played the nine-member Orchestra of Eternity (German Orchestra of Eternity ) coming to advantage in the songs. Has an outstanding position in this case one of the track Vocari dei: It contains images of an answering machine, the turned off the tape and encouraged fans around the world, to call there and speak a message on the " answering God." Several callers used this opportunity for sometimes very moving messages, where they laughed, cried and poured out her soul. The records were Accompanied by a peaceful instrumental accompaniment. The band itself describes the song as the most poignant, the ever recordings.

Only in February 2004, after having attended the shows and further details of adjustments Gildenlöw began studio recordings. When the album was released in September 2004, it promptly split the fan base because of the musical experimentation, the philosophical content and also because of the low points value of the progressive metal in the individual pieces. The first DVD of the tape recording of one of the Eskilstuna shows was put on the market.

Scarsick and renewed line-up changes (2005-2008)

Pain of Salvation played since 2004 because of Daniel Gildenlöw rejection of fingerprinting all foreign visitors and because of his negative attitude to the Bush administration no longer in the USA. He finds that these measures undermine the democratic rights and the right to self-determination. On 22 January 2009 he announced his support for the newly elected U.S. President Barack Obama and lifted the embargo concert, but protested again his stance on taking fingerprints.

On 21 February 2006, Kristoffer Gildenlöw was thrown out of the band after there were discrepancies due to its low attendance at rehearsals, since he lived in the Netherlands and the rest of the band in Sweden. Gildenlöw has concerned himself like Dial with other progressive metal projects. The bass tracks played one his brother Daniel in the upcoming recordings.

For the next album Scarsick, released on 22 January 2007, Daniel Gildenlöw recorded the bass tracks. The album was recorded mixed, especially the new direction of the band was criticized. For the tour that followed the release, Simon Andersson was hired as a touring bassist and declared on 10 March 2007 on full-fledged band member. He played with on the concerts that were recorded for the second live DVD, Ending Themes (On the Two Deaths of Pain of Salvation ). This is among other things a cover version of the popular Leonard Cohen song Hallelujah. The DVD was released after several postponements on May 24, 2009.

Because of his desire to have more time for his family, the drummer Johan Langell announced in an official communication on 29 April 2007, his departure from the band, which he ultimately took place after completion of the tour. Although we had wanted as a replacement for a Swedish drummer, they found most convincing at the end of the elongate selection process Léo Margarit from Toulouse. On 6 October the same year it was announced on the Motstøy festival in Notodden, that he would replace Langell. Both were present at this concert, the latter playing his band debut with a three-minute drum solo at the end of the piece Nightmist. End of 2008, Pain of Salvation recorded another outlet: The bassist Simon Andersson left the band to spend more time on his side projects and to recover from the Scarsick tour.

The Road - Salt - series (2008 -present)

On February 13, 2009 Pain of Salvation announced that they would participate in the aligned by Dream Theater Progressive Nation tour U.S. in 2009 - this would be the first tour of the U.S. for more than five years now. It was, however, thwarted by the insolvency of the SPV, the Pain of Salvation and Beardfish compelled, for lack of affordability to cancel the tour.

The bankruptcy also meant that the original intention of the band to release a double album in 2009, could not be implemented, even though the instruments were already all recorded. But a new song Mortar Grind was released on November 1, 2008, which should appear on the future album and also on a planned EP. The album should be doing similar to pursue a concept of Remedy Lane, but there " be different than anything the band had done before " musical. Since InsideOut Music was soon taken over by Century Media, the financial basis was given again and the album was completed, but in two divided albums, of which the first Road Salt 1: Ivory will be called. Even during the work announced the band in December 2009 that the title track Road Salt the contribution to Melodifestivalen 2010 will, the Swedish National competition for the Euro Vision Song Contest 2010. Pain of Salvation came up with this song up in the first semi-final, reached there but only the fourth of eight courses, bringing the band to retire.

Road Salt One ultimately appeared on May 17 in Europe and on June 8, 2010 in the United States in two slightly different versions. Also, this album has been accused continued to be removed from the Progressive Metal; it contains not only classic hard rock and blues numbers and a waltz and ballad pieces. The ensuing tour led the band except within Europe to India on the Manfest in Madras.

The work on the next studio album were initially disrupted because singer Daniel Gildenlöw had become father and took care of his family. On September 23, 2011 Road Salt Two was released on InsideOut Music. This was followed by a 2012 tour supporting Opeth and 2012, a headlining tour through Europe. On the tour in the spring of 2013, the band of Anneke van Giersbergen and the Icelandic band Árstíðir was accompanied.

Style

The characteristic sound of the band is made up of more powerful, accentuated guitar work and solos as well as clearly sung and partly spoken or whispered vocals of Daniel Gildenlöw multi-octave -range voice together.

In their songs to brutal guitar riffs alternate with rather worn passages from. The band experimented especially in terms of polyrhythms. The other band members sing in places second or voices.
