Palace of the Parliament

The Parliament Palace (also Palace of the Parliament, Romanian Palatul Parlamentului ) in the Romanian capital Bucharest, formerly known as " House of the People " (Casa Poporului ), is the largest building in Europe and one of the largest in the world. The central palace is located at the western end of about three kilometers long boulevard Unirii.

History

The building was built in 1983-1989 according to the ideas of the dictator ruling Romanian President Nicolae Ceauşescu; The official groundbreaking ceremony took place on 25 June 1984. The architect of the building Anca Petrescu (1949-2013) won the competition for the palace immediately after completion of their studies at the age of 26 years and remained after the completion of the main responsible for its design. To make room for the building of superlatives to whole complex also includes large parts of new squares and avenues, in the late 1970s partly historic homes with approximately 40,000 residential units, a dozen churches and three synagogues were demolished evicted parts of the old town. Originally, the building was called Casa Poporului ( German House of the People ), described at the time of the Bukarestern derisively as the "House of the victory over the people." After the political changes and the execution of Ceausescu in 1989 flared up discussions about the continued use of the building. In April 1991, the decision was made that the complex of buildings not demolished and will be renamed the "Palace of the Parliament ". After further modifications, the building since 1997, serves as the seat of the Romanian Chamber of Deputies, the Senate in 2005 was also associated with its seat in the palace. There is also an international conference center, where, for example, in April 2008, took place the NATO Parliamentary Assembly. On the upper floors there is an international customs and police organization. On the back of the building, the National Museum of Modern Art is housed.

Architecture and Construction
