Palacio Municipal (Montevideo)

The Palacio Municipal is a building in the Uruguayan capital of Montevideo.

The to 1930 carried out as a result of 1929 to its construction competition in 1936 - according to other sources is already mentioned as date of commencement 1935 - Built to 1940 building is located in the Barrio Centro and lies there on Avenida 18 de Julio 1352 - 1360, and the streets Ejido, Soriano and Santiago de Chile. Designed by the architect Mauricio Cravotto 78 -meter-high building was opened after construction began on July 16, 1941 although it was different from the original plans of the architect. Contrary to the plan, which provided for a height of 114 meters, had to be modified because of financial reasons the construction. Until 1968 was a wise further construction stages. In the vernacular of the building for many years was sometimes referred to as Monumento al Ladrillo and thus as a memorial of the brick. On the building forecourt located since 7 April 1958 inaugurated on August 25, 1931 replica of the David sculpture by Michelangelo, whose original location at the intersection of Avenida Gral. Rivera came to the streets of Juan D. Jackson and Arenal Grande.

The building houses the seat of the Municipality of Montevideo. The land on which the Palacio Municipal is, previously served different purposes. It was once home to the English Cemetery and served as a military parade ground, and as a place for agricultural exhibitions or carnival activities.

Since 1995, the Palacio Municipal is classified as Bien of Interest Municipal.
