Centro (Montevideo)

Centro is a neighborhood ( barrio ) of the Uruguayan capital, Montevideo.

Location

It is located south of the city. West of the Centro is the Ciudad Vieja, the old city of Montevideo. In the north of La Aguada follows, while in the east Cordón continues the urban area. To the south it is bounded by the Convention therein Barrio Sur. With regard to the road layout form in the north, the Rambla FDRoosevelt and Calle La Paz, in the East Calle Dr.J.Barrios Amorin and a small section of Constituyente, in the south Calle Canelones and in the West Calle Andes, a short section of Avenida 18 de Julio and Calle Florida, the external borders of the district.

Currently (as of 2010) are recorded 20,841 inhabitants here.

Description

Central street of the Centro is the Avenida 18 de Julio, which passes through here in the southern half of the Plaza Independencia to Plaza Fabini and Plaza cagancha to the east. There are scores of shops and other service providers, but also cinemas or theaters, so this part of the town is the commercial center of Montevideo. In addition, part of the Avenida Libertador runs diagonally through the Centro.

Among the many vorzufindenden in Centro historic and significant buildings include the Palacio Salvo, the Palacio Santa Lucía, the hotel Radisson Victoria Plaza, the Palacio Lapido, the Palacio Díaz, the Edificio del París London, the Torre de los Profesionales, the Torre del Gaucho, to Banco de Seguros del Estado or the Palacio Municipal.
