Tres Cruces

Tres Cruces is a neighborhood ( barrio ) of the Uruguayan capital, Montevideo.

Location

It is located in the central core area of Montevideo at the intersection of three major thoroughfares of the city Avenida 18 de Julio, Bulevar Artigas and Avenida 8 de Octubre. To the west adjacent to the Barrio Cordón, east is Parque Batlle. In addition, here is the starting point of Avenida Italia.

Infrastructure

With the barrio located in Terminal Tres Cruces, the district has also over the central hub of the long-distance passenger traffic in the country. From this two-storey bus terminal, where a large shopping center is connected with buses to all parts of the country, as well as the important places of the rest of central South America. The neighborhood is also home to office and residential buildings, as well as several public and private hospitals. Significant buildings in the district are, for example, the Edificio Sociedad Medica Uruguaya and Casa Juan R. Domínguez. Also located on the border of the neighboring Barrio Parque Batlle of the Obelisk of Montevideo, as well as on the Bulevar Artigas a large white cross. The latter shows the location of the fair, which Pope John Paul II held there on his first visit to Uruguay in 1987.

Origin of the name and history

The name of the neighborhood dates from the early nineteenth century. At this time, when the state Uruguay did not exist as such, there was in 1813, the Congreso de Tres Cruces ( also called Congreso de Abril ) held in the course of his political principles Artigas ( the Instrucciones del año XIII) formulated.
