Palermo (Montevideo)

Palermo is a neighborhood ( barrio ) of the Uruguayan capital, Montevideo.

Location

It is located south of the city on the coast of the Río de la Plata. To the west it borders on the district of Barrio Sur in the north is the Cordón neighborhood. Palermo is bordered on the south by the leading along the coast Rambla República Argentina. In the east the calle Jackson forms the boundary of the barrios. There, the district Parque Rodó begins.

Etymology and history

The name of Palermo is due to the eponymous Italian city, which in turn results from the fact that there settled a large number of immigrants who arrived in the city until the first decades of the 20th century. Palermo is poorer classes for residential purposes. A common form of housing were here a long time the so-called montevideo typical Conventillos and Inquilinatos. Together with the Barrio Sur Palermo forms the center of the carnival activities of the descendants of immigrants of East African origin and is regarded as the cradle of Candombe.

Infrastructure and attractions

The district is the seat of the Universidad del Trabajo del Uruguay ( UTU ), in San Salvador, as well as that of the Latin American Integration Association Latin American Integration Association and the Embassy of the United States.
