Small Prawn ( Palaemon elegans)

The rock shrimp ( Palaemon ) are a genus of crustaceans of the family of rocks and partner shrimp ( Palaemonidae ). The species of this genus worldwide live on seashores. The closely related swimming shrimp ( Palaemonetes ), however, live in fresh and brackish water.

Description

Rock shrimp are transparent, often marked with stripes or patterns marigold in different colors. These patterns solve the body shape optically and thus contribute to the camouflage.

Rock shrimp are omnivorous and brush partly fish. They themselves are eaten by fish and birds and are an important part of the food chain.

Rock shrimp are caught as food for aquarium fish, but kept because of their pretty coloring in aquariums.

Species

In the North Sea Sägegarnele ( Palaemon serratus ) occurs. However, the known as garnet brown shrimp belonging to the genus Crangon.
