Paleokastritsa (Greek Παλαιοκαστρίτσα, ( f sg ); official name Dimos Paleokastriton Δῆμος Παλαιοκαστριτών, community of Paleokastriter ') from 1997 to 2010, a community and is a popular resort on the west coast of Corfu. The municipality was created in 1997 and went in 2010 in the newly formed large village on Corfu, where she has since formed one of 15 community districts.
The name means Old Castle Square and refers to the location within sight of the castle Angelokastro. The area around Paleokastritsa consists of two peninsulas and five bays, the Panorama's visitors from the mountain village Lákones (also called Balcony of the Ionian Sea ) to the most beautiful of the island. There is no village center as the center: hotels, houses and taverns are scattered over the spectacular scenery and are often hidden among olive trees and cypresses. The municipality includes the villages of Doukades and Gardelades.
The bay Agios Spyridon is the starting point for a boat trip to visit some caves. Some distance away stands a small rock from the sea; he is to be the petrified ship of Odysseus, who is said to have reached shipwrecked the beach at Paleokastritsa and was received by Princess Nausicaa, according to Greek mythology. Her father Alcinous, king of the Phaeacians, made sure that Odysseus was able to return to his home on Ithaca island, not far away location.
On the northeast peninsula, high on a rock, lies the monastery of Panagia Theotokos tis Paleokastritsa, founded already in 1228, but come the present building dating from the 18th century. Behind the whitewashed walls of the monastery, there are landscaped gardens, blütenberankte arcades, an old oil mill and a small museum in the old icons from the 17th - 19th Century and a Corfiot Bible are on display from the 13th century.
Paleokastritsa is the birthplace of the Greek- German singer Vicky Leandros.
