Palais Gutmann

The Palais Gutmann is located in the first district of Vienna Innere city, Beethovenplatz 3

History

The strictly historicist palace was built in the years 1869-1871 by the architect Carl Tietz for the wealthy Jewish industrialist family Gutmann in New Vienna - Renaissance style. After the expropriation in 1938 the palace was used by the Nazi Party in 1941 and Franz Klimscha commissioned to redesign the building. A recent reorganization took place in the years 1956-1961 by Carl Kronfuß. The palace is today managed by the Austria Immobilien GmbH (BAI ).

Description

The five-storey palace conveys in his high ashlar base zone and the little accentuated, flat ashlar façade a massive impression. The high arched portal is flanked by four Ionic pilasters which support a balcony with stone balustrade on a Volutengebälk. Blend balustrades adorn the parapets of the windows on the piano nobile and the overlying basement. The windows are framed by Ionic pilasters and molded on the third floor as Ädikulafenster. A wide Arabeskenfries adorns the Sohlbankgesims the fourth floor, the windows of which carry a Segmentgiebelverdachung. Inside, a staircase with Corinthian marble columns leads to the upper floors. The rooms are richly decorated with wall paneling, coffered ceilings, original preserved marble fireplaces and oil paintings. Among the paintings are the "Twelve Months " by August Eisenmenger.
