Palangkaraya is an Indonesian city. It is located on the island of Borneo and is capital of the province of Kalimantan Tengah ( Central Kalimantan ). It has a population of 220 962 (2010 ).

The town grew from a small settlement Pahandut in 1957 became the capital of the newly established province of Kalimantan Tengah and renamed Palangka Raya. Today the city is the administrative, transport and economic center of the province with its own airport.

More recently, the city was frequently the scene of conflicts between the indigenous Dayak and from other regions of Indonesia here in the context of the controversial program " Transmigration " resettled people.
