The nine-story building was designed in 1935 by the architect Enrico Del Debbio, Arnaldo Foschini and V. Ballio Morpurgo as the Partito Nazionale Fascista party headquarters, the Italian Fascist Party, as the Palazzo del Littorio. The construction works commenced before the Second World War, instead, the project was completed but not until 1956. The monumental building is located in close proximity to the Foro Italico (formerly Foro Mussolini ) between Monte Mario and the Tiber.

The clad in Roman travertine from Tivoli exterior architecture of the Palazzo is not the rationalist Giuseppe Terragni obliged but satisfied with its 169 -meter-long, strictly paratactically perforated facade articulated the widespread stereotype fascist rule architecture. With more than 1,300 rooms is one of the largest buildings in Italy.

In 1959, the Palazzo della Farnesina, seat of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. For this reason, the term " Farnesina " is now used also for the Ministry itself, it refers to the location of the building, which belonged to the Farnese earlier.
