Palazzo della Pilotta

The Palazzo della Pilotta is a complex of buildings in the historic center of Parma, in Emilia -Romagna, Italy. Its name derives from the pelota.

History

Built around 1583 in the last years of the reign of Duke Ottavio Farnese, he was born around the corridor ( corridors ), which connected the keep ( Rocchetta, the remains can be visited near the banks of the Parma River ) with the Ducal Palace: The latter was in 1622 by Duke Ranuccio I started but never completed. The facade on Piazza della Ghiaia missing; the adjacent Dominican church of St. Peter is destroyed.

Plant

This ensemble includes three courtyards: the Cortile di San Pietro Martire ( Cortile della Pilotta called nowadays ), Cortile del Guazzatoio (originally della pelota ) and the Cortile della Racchetta. The Pilotta contained a large hall, which was later converted to Teatro Farnese, stables and hostler apartments, the Academy hall and other rooms. After the decline of the Farnese family, the palace was looted, starting with Duke Charles I, who managed the assets of the Farnese to Naples.
