Paleornithology

Paläornithologie (Greek: palaios = old, ornis = bird, logos = word) is the branch of Palaeozoology, which deals with the fossil birds.

Although there are a number of palaeontological and biological sections that deal with paläornithologischen issues and finds birds were formerly in recent years in the public interest, the term is rarely used.

The International Trade Association for Paläornithologie is the Society of Avian Palaeontology and Evolution ( SAPE ).

Questions of Paläornithologie

The following topics were in recent years the subject paläornithologischer research:

  • Origin of birds / ancestry of so-called non-avian dinosaurs
  • Origin of bird flight
  • Emergence of brood care and mating behavior in birds
  • Radiation and phylogeny of birds in the Cretaceous
  • Extinction and survival of groups of birds at the Cretaceous - Tertiary boundary
  • Origin and relationships of modern bird orders
  • Radiation in the Tertiary
  • Causes of flightlessness in birds
  • Avifaunae various important fossil sites, for example, the Messel Pit ( Middle Eocene ), the Phopshorite of Quercy ( Eocene to Oligocene ), the London Clay (Lower Eocene ), the Green River Formation (Lower Eocene ), the Jehol Group ( Lower Cretaceous )
  • The study of the late Quaternary avifauna.
