Palk Strait

Geographical location

The Palk Strait (English Palk Strait) is a broad 55-127 km Sea strait between the Indian state of Tamil Nadu and the northern tip of the island nation of Sri Lanka. It connects the Bay of Bengal in the northeast of the Palkbucht ( Palk Bay ) to the southwest lie the Gulf of Mannar, which by a headland of Tamil Nadu, the island of Pamban, the Adam's Bridge (Adam 's Bridge or Rama 's Bridge ) and the belonging to Sri Lanka Mannar island is separated from the Palkbucht.

Between the city of Tamil Nadu extending in a southeasterly direction headland and the island of Pamban only about two kilometers wide and crossed by the Pamban Bridge Pamban Passage offers a drive-through for smaller vessels for which the railway bridge to be opened. Consisting of a series of small islands and coral reefs Adam's Bridge is passable at best for small fishing boats on a few passages.

The strait is named after Sir Robert Palk (1717-1798), the British Governor of Madras Province in the years 1763-1767.

In India, a shortening of the sea route to Sri Lanka around through the Sethusamudram Shipping Canal Project ( short Setu channel) is discussed in various versions over and over again. This involves the construction of a suitable for ocean-going vessels through the channel groove Adam's Bridge and around wells in the Palk Strait and Gulf of Mannar.
