Palmitos Park

Palmitos Park is a zoo and botanical garden on the island of Gran Canaria, which extends over an area of ​​approximately 20 hectares. It is located about ten kilometers north of Maspalomas South Beach, shielded in a ravine.

In this subtropical oasis with small springs and lakes were up to a fire at the end of July 2007, which destroyed about 65 % of the park and some of the animals lost their lives to see 45 different species of palms from around the world, as well as about 1,200 birds, butterflies, and a plantation of over 400 species of cacti, agaves and orchids. In addition, there was also a monkey outdoor enclosure with extensive operating opportunity for its residents.

Furthermore, belonged also Europe's largest butterfly house, a species-rich aquarium, a pond for waterfowl and flight and bird look to offer.

Due to the extensive damage caused by the catastrophic fires in Gran Canaria in the last days of July 2007, the Palmitos Park was closed ever since. The reopening of the park took place on August 4, 2008.

The park has since been divided into several topics. The Orchid House, which is the largest of the Canary Islands, is home to hundreds of species of orchids. A cactus garden, some with up to 4 meters high cacti and a butterfly enclosure have also been created after the reopening.

In several shows ( birds of prey show, parrot show, exotic bird flight show ) the different species of birds are repeatedly presented on the day.

In April 2010, a dolphinarium was opened. The basin has an area of ​​3,000 square meters and is filled with 4 million liters of water. 11 filters provide for the maintenance of water quality. For visitors to the dolphin shows a grandstand for 1,500 people was built.
