Panama Al Brown

Alfonso Teofilo " Panama Al " Brown ( born July 5, 1902 in Colon, † April 11, 1951 in New York City, New York, United States) was a Panamanian boxer in the bantamweight. He was the first world champion from a Latin American country.

The black counter Boxer began his professional career in 1922, first in Panama, punched in the U.S. and often in European cities such as Paris, where he was well acquainted with intellectuals like Jean Cocteau later. In 1929 he won the title by NYSAC version, was recognized in 1930 by the NBA.

During his time as a world champion he lost some time in battles that were not official title defenses. 1934 was taken from him because of a denied title defense of the NBA World Champion title. However, in a title fight (IBU version) he lost again until 1935 against the Spaniards Baltazar Sang chili and then finished his career for the time being. However, after two years he returned to the ring and hit 1938 song chili in a rematch. Following a title defense he resigned the title, as he was no longer in a position to meet the bantamweight limit.

He continued to fight until 1942, and then stepped back for good. In the " Ring Magazine ", he is considered fifth best Bantamgewichtler of all time and the second best Panamanian boxer Roberto Durán after. In 1992, Brown induction into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
