Pando (tree)

Pando (from Latin Pandere - " spread " ) is a colony of a male American aspen (Populus tremuloides ), the tree trunks are connected through the root system and thus form a single organism. While individual tree trunks die off and get new, there is a colony continued as a whole. Such Klonkolonien also occur in other plants, some of which have become known because of their size or her age (for example lomatia tasmanica, King Clone or Old Tjikko ). Pando is one of the oldest and heaviest known living organisms at all.

Description

Pando is located at the western end of the Colorado Plateau in Fish Lake National Forest in Utah. The whole colony ( Genet ) covers an area of ​​43.6 hectares. The number of stems is about 47,000 and the total weight is estimated at about 6000 tons. The individual logs are 130 years old on average, the age of Pando as a whole is estimated to be over 80,000 years.
