Paphiopedilum glanduliferum

Paphiopedilum, called in German Women's shoe or even Venus shoe, is a genus of orchids. This genus is distributed from Nepal to India, southern China, Thailand, Malaysia to the Philippines, Borneo, Sumatra, and New Guinea. Currently about 100 species and subspecies are recognized.

The name derives from Paphia, a common epithet in Cyprus for the goddess Aphrodite, which should have gone near the town of Paphos on land, and Pedilon, the Greek word for slipper or sandal from.

Description

Plants of the genus Paphiopedilum orchids with sympodialem growth, that is, the shoot stops growing after the growing season and through the rhizome is a new shoot formed. The leaves are hairy soft and the flowering stem, the buds come out of bracts at the end of the shoot. They grow terrestrial, lithophytic in moss, rarely epiphytic. The leaves may be mottled or pale green, the latter form can be grown cooler.

The flowers of Paphiopedilum feature is the lower Petalum what has evolved in the evolution to a shoe-like shape, and the upper sepal, which is larger than other orchids. The two outer petals can sometimes be rotated, such as in Paphiopedilum glanduliferum.

Pharmacology

Plants of the genus Paphiopedilum are slightly toxic in all plant parts. The toxins are concentrated in leaves and stems. The main active ingredient is crystallized calcium oxalate. The consumption of plant parts may cause nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. In addition, in the plant cause quinoid compounds contained quite Contact Allergies.
