Features

The moths reach a wingspan of 64-90 millimeters. Their basic color is yellow with black pattern, as with many knights moths, but dominates the black usually the faded light yellow color. The forewings have a very broad black outer margin, are included in the near the edge of small yellowish spots. The tiger stripes are not sharply defined and somewhat blurred, the fourth of them, near the wing tip, actually consists of three more or less flowing intertwining spots. The wing veins are finely colored black. The hind wings have an even wider black outer border, yellowish at the edge, arc spots are enclosed, which are colored to black tail more and more towards orange. The outer edge is slightly waved. On the hind wings each of the first tiger stripes of the forewing runs on, the wing veins are colored black. Am also black edged wings inner edge is located at the bottom of each a blue, black and red-colored eye-spot, in whose environment the Black, is partially covered with blue gestäubten spots. In females, these bruises pull along the entire outer edge, with them, the arc spots are larger. Occurrence

The animals are found along the west coast of the U.S. from California to British Columbia in Canada. To the east they are found to Montana. They live in the light Bergland, in forest areas and in river valleys.

Way of life

The moths suck nectar from flowers, but occasionally nutrients from puddles and wet spots. The males fly about in search of females. These lay their eggs singly on the leaves of their food plants. The caterpillars rest on silken documents which they spin in rolled leaves. They overwinter in the pupa.

Flight Times

They fly south in several generations from March to August, in the north of April to July.

Food of the caterpillars

The caterpillars feed on trees and shrubs of the rose family ( Rosaceae ), Buckthorn family ( Rhamnaceae ) and birch family ( Betulaceae ).
