Papist (also Romanist ) is a derived from the word pope, a derogatory term for Catholics by others, especially Protestant Christians. The corresponding noun is Popery.

The polemical expression goes back to the Reformation in England in the 16th century. He reduced Catholicism aware of the papacy, which is seen as an outstanding individual and delimiting symbol. In German-speaking countries, the term is now used only rarely or only in ironic distancing manner.
