Papuk

Papuk is a low mountain in Slavonia in eastern Croatia. The highest elevation of the low mountain is 953 meters high. A part of the mountain was declared a protected area, the Natural Park Papuk.

There is a famous hunting area with far-reaching forests and rolling hills in the middle elevations of the Slavonian plains.

The nearest large towns are Daruvar, Požega Virovitca Orahovica and Kutjevo.

In the Croatian War came here to violent clashes between the newly formed Croatian Army and the Yugoslav People's Army. In this area, numerous remote villages were consistent with Serbian population, which had been settled by Austria - Hungary as a defense farmers in the territory of the former Military Frontier as a protection against the Ottoman Empire. For planned trips it is advisable to take extra care and not have to go without local knowledge to people in the woods, because the area still belongs in the former border of the then proclaimed Republic of Serbian Krajina to the most heavily mined areas in Croatia.
