Discovery

The papyri were found in 1860 by Auguste Mariette in Thebes. As described in the first publication of the papyri, they found themselves in a grave chamber next to a Rishi Coffin. Among the other grave goods found there was a chest that belonged to the writer of the labor camp Neferhotep. This person will also appear on other objects in the grave and on the smaller of the two papyri, so that one can assume that it was his funeral.

The great papyrus

In the large papyrus, various lists are sorted by date. It is listed in the royal court of the input and output of food. There you will find this long lists of officers present at the court and related notes, which they each received of food. In addition, historically interesting events are called, like the arrival of Nubians or the exit of the king to the temple of Medamud. Also important are the long lists of officials who allow us a unique insight into the composition of the royal court. Although the family of the ruler is in the list, so this is not even listed as recipients of food. The papyrus is preserved only in part. Above all, the name of the king is poorly preserved, so that there is debate on the dating of this document. The preserved remains of a royal cartouche are mostly reconstructed Sobekhotep II.
