It is not to be confused with the parable of the fig tree and the cursing of the fig tree.

Wording

The parable is as follows:

" 6 And he told them this parable: A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and as he came and looked to see if it bore fruit, he found none. 7 Then he said to the gardener: Now I 'm coming three years and look to see if this fig tree bears fruit, and find nothing. Cut it down! What should he continue the ground take his power? 8 The gardener replied: Lord, let him this year still stand; I will dig up the ground around it and fertilize it. 9 Perhaps he still carries fruits; if not, then cut it down. "

The parable is a warning to repent ahead, culminating in the verse immediately preceding the parable story: " You will all perish as if you repent. " ( Lk 13,5 EU).

Interpretive approaches

The parable story describes a constellation of three: the vineyard owner who expects fruit, the gardener, who still wants to maintain a year's tree, and the fig tree that does not bear the expected fruit. Whether the tree produced the desired fruit and he will thus not be hewn down, is not mentioned in the parable.

Allegorical interpretation

In an allegorical interpretation approach is the vineyard owner for God. The husbandmen, and the fig tree is inconsistent interpreted as Israel.

More theological interpretations

The theologian Joachim Jeremias sees the following key statement in the parable: God's mercy went to repealing already taken punitive resolve; the wine -proofed wants to "do the impossible, try the Last possible " ( through composting ).
