Paracrocidura

The Congo Eyelash shrews ( Paracrocidura ) are one living in central Africa shrew genus with three species.

The shrews of this genus resemble the white tooth shrew ( Crocidura ), but are distinguished by the relatively large head and details in the construction of the teeth. The limbs and tail are relatively short, thin, short fur is colored dark gray or dark brown. These animals reach head torso lengths 65-96 mm, tail length 33-46 mm and a weight of 13 to 16 grams.

The range of this shrews extends from Cameroon and the Central African Republic to the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda. Their habitat are rainforests at altitudes of 200-2350 meters. Little is known about the way of life: these animals are likely to be bottom dwellers and browse the leaves lying on the ground for food.

There are three known species of this genus.

  • The Congo Eyelash shrew ( Paracrocidura schoutedeni ) is the best known species of this genus. Their range extends from Cameroon to the Democratic Republic of Congo.
  • Paracrocidura maxima is slightly larger and inhabited the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda and Uganda.
  • Paracrocidura graueri is only known from a single specimen, which was found in Itombwe Mountains in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The degree of hazard of this type is not known.
