Paraguarí

Paraguarí ( Guaraní Paraguari ) is a city in Paraguay ( South America). It is the capital of the department Paraguarí and lies about 60 km from the capital Asunción.

Paraguarí was founded in 1775 by the Governor Agustín Fernando de Pinedo. The nearby Cerro Porteño was on January 15, 1811 scene of a battle in which the Argentine troops were defeated by General Manuel Belgrano by the armed forces of Paraguay under Colonel Manuel cavanas. During the Triple Alliance War Paraguarí was the terminus of the Paraguayan railway line. Since the 1930s, here the artillery regiment is stationed 1 General Bruguez.

The center of the town is the Church of St. Thomas. In a nearby rock cave ( Gruta de Santo Tomás ) so far undeciphered hieroglyphs shown, as well as footprints that were supposed to derive from this apostle, long before the Spaniards first brought Christianity to Paraguay after a legend.

The city has about 10,300 inhabitants (calculated 2006).
