The South Ossetian parliament (Russian Парламент Южной Осетии ) is the parliament of the internationally recognized by few countries Republic of South Ossetia. The unicameral parliament currently has 34 seats, with the South Ossetian constitution actually provides only 33 seats. A parliamentary term lasts five years. Prerequisite in order to be elected as an MP in the South Ossetian Parliament can, the South Ossetian citizenship and a minimum age of 21 years.

History

The first parliamentary elections were held in South Ossetia prior to the de facto independence from Georgia, as the aspirations to independence from Georgia grew stronger in South Ossetia. After Südossetienkrieg 1991 to 1992 the country reached its de facto independence. 1994, 1999, 2004 and most recently in 2009 Parliamentary elections were held.

According to the Georgian offensive in the Caucasus war in 2008, erected in 1937 Parliament building was severely damaged by artillery fire, then began a reconstruction.

Since the 2009 elections, three parties are represented in Parliament: unity, with 17 seats, the People's Party of South Ossetia with nine seats and the Communist Party of South Ossetia with eight seats.
