Parliamentary Triangle, Canberra

The Parliamentary Triangle (English " Parliament Triangle" ) is the central district of Canberra, with some of the most important building in Australia. The triangle is formed by the Commonwealth Avenue, Kings Avenue and Constitution Avenue. The buildings within the triangle were located and designed so that the visual impression is the best possible way; many of them are popular tourist attractions.

Description

The Parliamentary Triangle was an integral part of Walter Burley Griffin's design for the construction of Canberra. The corners of the triangle are the Parliament House, the Defense Department and the City Hill. Griffin planned the city around two perpendicular axes which intersect at the center of the triangle. The land axis leads from Mount Ainslie on Capital Hill and Red Hill to Mount Bimberi, the highest mountain in the Australian Capital Territory. The water axis follows the Lake Burley Griffin. The south shore of Lake cuts through the Parliamentary Triangle and forms a smaller triangle, which is called the " Parliamentary Zone." In this almost all important buildings located within the Parliamentary Triangle.

According to Griffin's plan, which is committed to the Garden City ideas, the streets are lined inside the triangle of large deciduous trees. The buildings are located within a spacious green areas. This creates a feeling of space and the building is being constructed are often several minutes' walk apart. The structural development within the Parliamentary Triangle is through the National Capital Authority - strictly controlled - a government agency under the Ministry of Transport and Regional Services.

Important buildings

The area, which is bounded by the Parliamentary Triangle corresponds, to a large extent the district park. The Parliament House and Old Parliament House ( New and Old Parliament) are the most important buildings inside the triangle. Other important for the design and symmetry of the triangle structures are High Court of Australia (Supreme Court ) and the National Gallery of Australia ( National Gallery ) east of the old Parliament in the vicinity of the lake as well as the National Library of Australia ( National Library ) and the Questacon ( Science and technology Center ) west of the old Parliament. The building of some ministries are also located inside the triangle.
