History

It was founded founded by Grégoire Kayibanda on 10 October 1959 as a political party of moderate Hutu nationalists who fought for the emancipation of the oppressed Hutu minority. Kayibanda overthrew the Tutsi monarchy of mwami Kigeri V. in 1961 and appointed a government of Hutus.

After independence in July 1962 party leader Kayibanda was now the President of the Republic of Rwanda. In 1965, the Parmehutu the only legal party was declared in the country.

In the coup of July 1973 Kayibanda was urged by his cousin Juvenal Habyarimana from his office, and the Parmehutu Party was banned.
