Pasquale Cicogna

Pasquale Cicogna († April 2, 1595 ) was 88th Doge of the Republic of Venice from 1585 to 1595. He supported the claim of Henry IV (France) to the French throne. Pope Sixtus V. Cicogna could also win to Catholicism in support of Henry by his conversion.

The Dogenamt

Negative fell on Pasqual Cicogna, that he left scatter during the procession to his coronation only silver coins among the people, instead of the usual gold ducats, which was a clear breach of tradition. These coins were called Cicognini. In the course of his reign Cicogna gained approval from the Venetians, because he was able to solve difficult problems with diplomatic skill.

Pasquale Cicogna was buried in the church Dei Crociferi.
