Patent Blue V (English patent blue or acid blue 3) is a triphenylmethane dye, which predominantly as a food color ( E 131 ) is used.

Properties

The systematic name is 2,4- disulfone -5-hydroxy -4 ', 4 " - bis ( diethylamino) triphenylcarbinol or 4 - [ 4,4'-bis -diethylamino- α -hydroxy- benzhydryl ] -6 - hydroxy -benzene -1 ,3- disulfonic acid. The naming of two systematic name is due to the triphenylmethane dyes that are represented as carbenium ions or quinoid form.

The dark blue powder is readily soluble in water and ethanol. In acidic solution is patent blue V green yellow, in basic blue.

Use

Patent blue V is used as a food color. It takes place due to its strong blue color and high brilliance mainly as a dye for sugar confectionery ( eg Smarties and jelly ), icings, drinks (eg, Blue Curacao liqueur or together with quinoline in " woodruff " drinks ) and ambrosia, drugs and Easter eggs use. A disadvantage of Patent Blue V is its poor lightfastness. It is toxicologically safe, as it was found in metabolism studies, that there is hardly absorbed following oral administration.

Patent Blue V, the United States and Norway is not approved in Australia, since one suspects a trigger for allergies in patent blue V.

In medicine it is used for marking tissue, such as sentinel node.
