The mountain is located in the Cordillera Central, a mountain range of the Philippine Cordilleras, in the north of Luzon, the largest island of the Philippines. Nearby the village of Mainit and the eponymous creek on its western flank. The nearest major town is Bontoc.

The Patoc is a stratovolcano, which is composed of andesite. He shows a strong furmarolische activity.
